Source: 2012 Automotive Environmental Scan Survey, October 2011
The above chart displays the five highest rated occupations in shortage in each state, as reported by businesses in the 2012 Automotive Environmental Scan Survey.
According to the survey results, light vehicle mechanics were rated in almost every state as being the occupation most frequently in shortage. This response was highest in Victoria where 32.3% of respondents reported light vehicle mechanics to be in shortage. Only in the Northern Territory were heavy vehicle mechanics reported to be in higher shortage (25.2% of respondents) than light vehicle mechanics (20%).
In terms of the severity of the shortages, most businesses reported that it took 3 or more months to fill any of the above positions. In addition, most businesses were operating at only half their capacity within those occupations reported as being in shortage.
Issues of pay, working conditions and attraction of labour towards the mining sector and other industries, were cited as the main reasons behind all skill shortages.
