Welcome to the Marine Industry Advisory Committee page. This page forms one of several web pages dedicated to different parts of the ASA industry advisory structure.

This page is designed to provide advice to the committee members and stakeholders more broadly on the work of the committee and the anticipated work-plan for the future. It also provides access to the Training Package Continuous Improvement Plans, which are a central element in the work of ASA and its committees.

The committee and ASA welcome feedback from stakeholders and welcome inputs into the development of the national training system and national workforce development initiatives.

Feedback from members of industry to join the Sector Advisory Committees has been very positive and a full meeting of all Committee members is planned for September 2011. Applications for Committee positions has been temporarily limited until the Committees meet and make final decisions of the full requirements of each Committee. Your feedback and continued interest in joining the Committees is welcomed and notice of any additional places that may be available will be provided throughout the year.

Marine Update – April 2, 2012

The Marine qualifications are currently up for review, and can be viewed on the ASA website. Feedback and comment so far has been positive, and will be presented to the Sector Committee at their next meeting. The draft qualifications are also being posted on the BIAA (Boating Industries Alliance Australia) website with some covering information to introduce their intent. It is anticipated a wider audience will be reached by using the BIAA and State BIAs as a means to display the qualifications.

Discussions are being held with BIA NSW for the development of a submission for NWDF (National Workforce Development Fund) funding pursuing a grant under the NWDF to up-skill BIA technical members, namely Marine Mechanics & Shipwrights. John Scott from ASA is assisting Alan Barrett BIANSW with the development of a submission.

A brochure that supports Marine Mechanical career pathways has now been developed and is available for download on the ASA website.

Marine Update – December 5, 2011

This month ASA have contacted Nik Parker from the Boating Industries Alliance Australia (BIAA), and Alan Barrett from the Boating Industry Australia NSW (BIA-NSW) to seek support and recommendations for Sector Committee membership. So far we have been able to recruit one new member to the committee – Steve Callaghan from Callaghans Marine Service. Several other potential candidates are giving consideration to the offer.

A review has been conducted for the following qualifications –
AUR20611 – Certificate II in Marine
AUR30511 – Certificate III in Marine
All qualifications have been restructured to feature a stronger set of core units that more accurately reflect their respective job role. Documents are drafted ready for distribution to key stakeholders.

Follow-up meetings have occurred with key industry stakeholders and some Sector Committee members to gather feedback regarding the Qualifications Review project.

Marine Update – October 19, 2011

This week internal ASA meetings have taken place to address increasing sector membership for the Marine sector committee. The aim of increasing committee membership is to form a national representation for the committee.

We are also currently undertaking a qualifications review for Marine, which includes a review of the packaging rules with a view to reconsider core and elective units and their relationship to current job roles.
