There is a need for electrical units of competence for bicycle qualifications given the advancements and access in the market around electrical bicycles. Overseas the advancement of pedelecs, electrically power assisted bicycles, has been great and we need to be ready for such a market surge here.
Currently some shops source mechancs/technicians from those who work on “gophers” or disability scooters, so there may be modules that can be borrowed or used as electives.

    Thanks for your comments Graham.

I agree that ASA will need to consider advances in bicycle technology such as electric drive systems. We are currently in the process of developing units of competency for Battery Electric Vehicle and Hybrid Electric Vehicles, and although the units relate to passenger vehicles in the main, we are fully aware of the application of these technologies to vehicles in other sectors such as bicycle, motorcycle, heavy vehicles and plant equipment.

I believe the development of units of competency relating to hybrid and electric drives will become a requirement in the review that is being undertaken of all qualifications that are aligned with the AUR05 Training Package.

I can’t really comment on disability scooter mechanics, their qualifications or borrowing modules to use as electives, other than to say that the current qualifications for bicycle technicians in AUR05 V3 do allow for the importing of units of competency that may be relevant in some way to the immediate needs of this particular job role.

We have a newly established committee that represents the bicycle industry, so I will take your comments forward to the committee for their recommendation.

    Regards,

    Jeff Heaney

We need more RTO’s to get behind this great career pathway. Stop and look at all the bicycles on our roads these days.
